About the song

“Apache,” a timeless instrumental piece written by Jerry Lordan, embodies a fascinating journey through musical history, resonating across decades and genres with its evocative soundscapes. Originating from Lordan’s inspiration drawn from the 1954 Western film “Apache,” the song was crafted to capture the valor and drama of the Apache warrior Massai, portrayed by Burt Lancaster.

Initially recorded by British guitarist Bert Weedon in early 1960, “Apache” lingered unreleased due to logistical challenges, prompting Lordan to introduce it to The Shadows during a tour with Cliff Richard. Impressed by its potential, The Shadows promptly adopted the song, infusing it with their signature sound characterized by Hank Marvin’s innovative use of echo and vibrato on the guitar. Released in July 1960, The Shadows’ rendition of “Apache” swiftly soared to the top of the UK Singles Chart, where it reigned for five consecutive weeks, solidifying its place in music history.

The song’s impact transcended borders with Danish guitarist Jørgen Ingmann’s cover, released in November 1960, achieving significant success in the United States by peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Ingmann’s interpretation highlighted the song’s universal appeal, blending surf rock sensibilities with a distinctive European flair.

Decades later, “Apache” experienced a revival when the Incredible Bongo Band reimagined it in 1973. Though initially overlooked upon release, the band’s rendition, featuring an extended percussion break, became a foundational track in hip-hop culture. Its infectious rhythm and dynamic structure made it a cornerstone for sampling in numerous hip-hop and dance tracks from the 1980s onwards, earning it the title of “hip-hop’s national anthem.”

Recognized for its enduring influence, “Apache” continues to receive accolades, such as its inclusion by Q magazine in the esteemed list of the “100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.” Jerry Lordan’s creation, from its humble beginnings with Weedon to its transformative reinterpretations by The Shadows and beyond, stands as a testament to the power of music to transcend time, borders, and genres, leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape.
